Vlad’s primary interest is optical investigation of structures. He is interested in quantum efficiency, carrier recombination rate, heat losses, etc. in light emitting diodes, lasers, and photovoltaic cells -- this is his realm.

Moudud does III-N MBE epitaxy involving bulk binary films (InN, GaN and AlN) on various substrates (Sapphire, Si, SiC and bulk Nitride crystal), ternary films (InGaN and AlGaN, constant composition and linearly graded for polarization induced doping) and heterostructures. His specialty lies in the MBE growth of ultrathin quantum structures of binary GaN/AlN and InN/GaN for photonic applications. He has growth experience with the Veeco Gen 930, Gen-10 and the Gen Xplor systems. At present Moudud is the in-charge of operation and maintenance of the Gen-Xplor MBE system in Jena/Xing groups MBE lab and also leads the research effort for Deep-UV photonics in the group.

He is originally from Bangladesh and likes to play ping-pong.

"Novel Terahertz Devices Based on Tunable 2DEG Systems"

Berardi's doctoral work dealt with the proposal and development of THz devices and systems based on two-dimensional semiconductors and non-traditional electron transport phenomena.

He is currently a tenure-track Assistant Professor at the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering of the University of Utah (Salt Lake City, UT). His research is focused on electromagnetics and nanophotonics.
